Lesson Learned: Go slowly

Last modified date

The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.

Warren Buffett

No matter your style, commit some time to just playing and learning. Patience is your friend, feel free to let an opportunity pass. Sure, you’ll miss those returns, but don’t lament, there will always be another chance. FOMO is almost never something worth listening to in investment. Spend the time to learn, buy some small positions and understand how it feels to win, and lose, before jumping in with both feet.

Ways to manage this:

  • Don’t put all your money in the market immediately. Buy small portions. Get used to how it feels, and how you manage those feelings.
  • Start to learn about the companies you’re invested in. Get the last 5 years of annual reports. Read the Chairman’s letter in each of them, like a story.
  • Remember to reflect on what you’ve learned.
